Outlook Says "PST File Is Not a Personal Folders File" - How Do I Repair a Corrupt PST?

I hit this error after Outlook crashed mid-sync, and my PST wouldn't open at all. Scanpst.exe ran for ages and still left some folders empty, so I tried Shoviv PST Repair Tool instead. I added the file, chose Advanced Scan since the damage looked serious, and let it run. Afterward I could preview every recovered folder, email, and attachment before saving anything, which was reassuring. I exported the data to a fresh PST, and it opened in Outlook with the folder structure intact.
