How long does cedar deck last?

The beauty and durability of cedar wood used for decks make it popular among homeowners, although its longevity depends a lot on maintenance and environmental conditions. In general, cedar decks can last for 15 to 25 years, and those which have been installed professionally will serve up to 30 years. The secret lies in the natural oils in cedar wood that protect it from rotting and insects; thus, the longevity of cedar is higher than those of most softwood trees. Nevertheless, the deck might be subjected to fading, cracking, or warping due to such factors as direct sunlight and moisture changes. To increase its longevity, cedar must be sealed, stained, and cleaned periodically. Moreover, there should be sufficient ventilation under the structure to avoid excessive moisture in the area. Without proper maintenance, the cedar deck might deteriorate after about 10 or 15 years since its installation.
