What actually counts as a dental emergency vs. something that can wait for a regular appointment?

I was asked this after a friend wasn’t sure if a cracked tooth required an Emergency Dentist Somerset NJ or could wait until Monday.

Normally handled as urgent:


severe, ongoing pain not resolving with OTC meds
Swelling, particularly if spreading or affecting breathing/swallowing
A knocked out tooth (time is of the essence here – the sooner you're seen, the better the chance of saving it)
Uncontrolled hemorrhage
Broken tooth (sharp edges, nerve exposed, sudden hot/cold sensitivity is a tip)


Usually fine to wait for routine appointment:


Little chip, no pain
Mild, infrequent sensitivity
A lost filling without pain (but don't wait too long on this one either)


If you’re not sure which category you fall into, a call describing the symptom is quicker than trying to self-diagnose. Most offices will tell you on the phone whether it needs to be seen today or can wait.
