A collector started calling my job multiple times a day last month. I told them my employer does not allow personal calls and asked them to stop. They kept calling anyway, and one rep even got rude with me when I pushed back. That is when I started looking into what they can actually do in Oklahoma.
Turns out Oklahoma mainly relies on the federal law for this stuff, plus some state consumer protections. A few things I learned that I wish I knew sooner:
They cannot keep calling your workplace once you tell them to stop
They have to send you a written notice of the debt within five days of first contact
They cannot threaten arrest or lawsuits they have no intention of filing
Calls before 8am or after 9pm are off limits
If they break the rules you may be able to get up to $1,000 plus them covering your legal fees
I started writing down every call with dates and times and saved my voicemails. That alone changed how the conversations went.
